Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) paired with compression wrapping—often referred to as the primary components of Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT)—is an intensive, gold-standard clinical approach used to treat lymphedema, severe edema, and post-surgical fluid accumulation.
Treatment Components
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): A specialized, light-touch technique using gentle, rhythmic strokes to stretch the skin and jumpstart sluggish lymphatic vessels. MLD moves trapped fluid away from compromised or swollen areas toward healthy, fully functioning lymph nodes for drainage.
Compression Wrapping: The application of specialized short-stretch multi-layer bandages immediately following MLD. Unlike elastic high-stretch athletic wraps, short-stretch bandages provide high working pressure (resistance when muscles contract) and low resting pressure (comfortable support when still), preventing fluid from refilling the drained tissues.
How the Combination Works
Mobilization: MLD actively clears stagnant, protein-rich lymph fluid out of the affected limb or tissue zone.
Containment & Continuous Drainage: Bandages are wrapped immediately afterward to maintain the reduction in volume. As you move, the bandages act as a firm wall against which your muscles push, creating a natural pumping action that continues to drive fluid out of the limb throughout the day.
Softening Fibrotic Tissue: Over time, the sustained, gentle pressure of the multi-layer wrap breaks down hardened, fibrotic tissue under the skin, softening the area and restoring normal tissue texture.
Key Benefits
Significant Volume Reduction: Dramatically reduces persistent swelling in arms, legs, or localized tissue zones.
Prevents Fluid Re-Accumulation: Locks in the progress made during your manual session so fluid does not simply pool back into the area.
Improves Limb Mobility & Comfort: Relieves the heavy, tight, or aching sensation caused by fluid buildup, making movement easier.
Supports Skin Health: Reduces the risk of skin breakdown, infections (such as cellulitis), and chronic tissue hardening.
